The Difference Between Dating and Being in a Relationship

Dating vs relationships - what's the difference? Learn about the key differences between dating someone casually vs being in an exclusive committed relationship.

The Difference Between Dating and Being in a Relationship

If someone is in a relationship, they present their partner as their boyfriend or girlfriend, while others who are not, present their partners as “someone they are dating”. There is a big difference between dating and being in a relationship. Generally speaking, quotes describe a less serious level of commitment before either person is ready to describe the other as a girlfriend or boyfriend. This is not a firm rule because the terms do not have a strict definition.

You can only determine which term is appropriate by discussing it with the person you are seeing. Some may assume that dating and being in a relationship are the same thing. People may make this assumption when they use each concept interchangeably, but each has differences that people may not notice. Sometimes it depends on how a person presents their partner to the people they meet.

They may refer to them as their girlfriend or boyfriend or say that this is someone they are dating. You may be dating someone for a while, but you're not sure if it's considered a relationship. You could be dating someone, but you're wondering when it becomes a relationship. Clarifying the aspects of each will help to understand the status between you and your partner.

It may seem like there's a thin and annoying line between a relationship and a date, but there's much more to it than that. So now you're going to ask yourself, what's the difference between dating and relationships? Dating can be an adventure involving casual sex and fun, but a relationship is a more serious and romantic affair. Dating doesn't involve exclusivity, but a relationship is based on loyalty. There's more love than lust in a relationship, and being your “stupid, careless self” is OK.

Let's now review the differences between dating and being in a relationship. Girlfriend and boyfriend are terms by which you call your respective partners if you are in an official relationship. If you're in a relationship with a girl, you'll call her girlfriend, while if you're in a relationship with a boy you'll call him boyfriend. But I suppose those terms could mean something different to everyone.

They may decide to be sexually exclusive, but still date other people, be sexually open but only date one another, or enter into a completely exclusive relationship in which the physical and emotional aspects of the developing relationship are reserved for each other. Dating exclusively means that you and your partner have talked about your future and have agreed to go out just for the time being. For me, going out or seeing someone means dating casually, nothing official, no exclusive title. Couples don't care about “days with bad hair” or “days without makeup” or that their boyfriend sees them wearing sweatshirts that don't fit them.

But I thought that a date should be when both people are looking for something to get out of it? It's clear that I wasn't. If you're dating someone, I thought that just means that you're going on a lot of dates, but not exclusive or committed in any way. If you can tell your boyfriend how you feel at all times, the two of you will be able to work things out. It took me a while to get used to this since I'm not thrilled that the word date is associated with having lunch with my co-workers, but it doesn't matter.

In the career transition and in a new city, I've realized that I don't want a boyfriend right now. Dating exclusively means that the two of you have decided to take your relationship one step further and are agreeing to date only for a while. If you and your current partner are called lovers and not boyfriend or girlfriend, there may be no intention of making the relationship last. Words such as girlfriend and boyfriend are used to describe a relationship in which two people consider themselves a couple.

A boyfriend will generally view this type of care as a responsibility that comes along with the commitment he made.
